QUARRY Bank based Simon Newby is making quite a name for himself in the world of Legends Racing.

The 31 year old has been crowned Rookie champion after a compelling first season in the sport.

Initially Simon made his name in karting having started in the sport as an eight year old.

He claimed: "I came out of karting at 15, but then went back into it a couple of times. Then my dad Gary, who acts as my mechanic, saw Legends racing and we were immediately interested.

"The cars are like mini-hot rods and designed on pre-war Ford and Chevvy bodies with 1250 cc Yamaha bike engines.

"They originate from the USA and a number of people race in Legends before going into Nascar.

"It's proper club racing with everyone on a level playing field".

Simon had to compete in 16 races throughout the season, taking place at top circuits such as Brands Hatch, Donnington, Mallory Park and Snetterton.

He saved his best performance until last, finishing third overall to comprehensively capture the Rookie title.

But Simon has no intentions of resting on his laurels.

He has his heart set on winning the main championship next season and explained: "We've stripped the car down completely and rebuilt it. We bought the car off a former champion and it was designed to his specifications rather than mine. We understand it much better now and feel that could make quite a difference.

"We're only competing for one thing next season and that's to win it!
