Stour club produces best at national competition

Stourbridge Shukokai Karate Club achieved their highest awards total when they entered the Kimura Shukokai National Karate Championships held recently in Stourbridge.

The tournament, which was held at the Crystal Leisure Centre, attracted competitors from all over the country.

The Crystal has hosted the event for some years and goes from strength to strength with the overall standard of the competitors becoming harder.This did not deter the home team from putting on a dazzling display in both Kumite and Kata events.

Club instructor Paul Acron, fourth Dan, was extremely pleased with the results.

He said: "We have a number of students who have entered many national competitions and some who compete at international level so each year their experience improves and are now reaping the rewards.

"Currently we also have a good number of newer students who are learning from the more experienced students.

"This combination has worked well for us and has shown in the awards we achieved as a team.

"It is hard to tell the higher grade students that it can take years before you see any rewards for all their hard work they put in, so when their day comes it is extremely pleasing.

"This then lifts the club and makes training easier for everyone.

"Our next step is to bring younger students through the ranks by opening a new weekend club in the next few weeks.

"We must maintain our standard throughout and pass on our knowledge to the younger ones.

"I am proud of all my students who not only competed but also supported the event.

"Let's hope we can repeat our success next year - well done everyone."
