Actor takes on gruelling race

INSTEAD of treading the boards, a Stourbridge-born actor will be pounding the streets when he takes on his first London Marathon.

Matthew Rowlands-Roberts will be taking part in the gruelling 26-mile road race on Sunday April 13 in aid of children's cancer charity, Clic Sargent.

The 33-year-old, who has just finished playing the title role in Steven Berkoff's adaptation of classic tragedy Oedipus, aims to complete the world's most famous marathon in four-and-a-half hours.

And he hopes to raise £1,750 for the charity, which provides support and financial help to families of youngsters battling cancer.

The London-based actor, who grew up in Pedmore, said: "Every 48 hours ten children are diagnosed with cancer and Clic Sargeant helps to keep families together when the unimaginable happens.

"It's a great charity - helping both children and their families; looking after them, taking them on holidays and helping out with expensive transport costs.

"Members of my own family have suffered from cancer and it would mean a great deal to me if people could sponsor me for this colossal event."

Anyone wishing to sponsor Matthew to help him reach his target can go to website www.justgiving.com/matthewrowlandsroberts
