Protective packaging in the modern world

To most people, protective packaging conjures up images of plastic, impenetrable covers on anything from memory cards to shrink-wrapped bacon.

But the reality is that protective packaging is a vital part of industry and commerce, and the manufacturing world would grind to a halt without the ever-increasing options available to encase their products.

Rust and corrosion damage, for example, costs the manufacturing industry millions of pounds a year. This damage could be avoided by carefully selecting rust prevention products as protective packaging.

Every item that is packed for sale or transit has its own individual requirements. With so many hi-tech products available online, the variety of packaging options available to ensure safe home delivery is astonishing.

Bubble wrap, foam wrap, air machines and expanding foam, loose fill and paper void products, corrugated rolls, edge and corner protected profiles and, of course, the trusty padded envelope are just some of the ways to protect goods in transit and storage.

In today’s environmentally conscious world, packaging manufacturers are increasingly using recyclable, biodegradable materials that go some way to counter the arguments around the issue of over-packaging.

However, more people are objecting to food - particularly fruit and vegetables - being unnecessarily packaged in plastic cases. So, eager for consumer approval, the supermarkets are slowly bowing to public pressure and gradually moving away from this practice.

Environmental arguments are one thing, but without protective packaging being used for safety, preservation and protection, the modern manufacturing industry would struggle to continue doing business.
