Athlete on fine form

INDIE rock stars Athlete left fans on a high as usual when they stopped off for an intimate set at Birmingham’s O2 Academy 2 as part of their most extensive UK tour to date.

Gig-goers crammed into the tiny showroom inside the main Dale End venue like sardines to catch a glimpse of the band - who, since parting company with Parlophone, have lined-up a busy couple of months to promote their forthcoming album Black Swan, which will be released through Fiction Records.

And not ones to disappoint, the award-winning London boys - minus bass player Carey Willetts who is recovering from a knee op - quickly managed to weave their musical magic on the easy-to-please crowd.

Their 90-minute set was packed with just the right blend of impressive new tunes from their soon-to-be-released fourth album and singalong favourites from Vehicles and Animals, Tourist and Beyond the Neighbourhood.

Their catchy, melodic sound was spot on as usual - despite a few false starts, which they soon charmed their way out of.

And charismatic frontman Joel Potts had little trouble getting fans to sing along to the band’s best anthems - El Salvador, Westside and You Got The Style.

The Getaway, Hurricane and the brilliant Wires also went down a treat in the short but very sweet outing.
