A MUCH respected figure on the regional music scene is set to bring his blues group for a special gig in Blackheath this weekend.

The Steve Ajao Quartet will perform at Blackheath Library from 7pm on Saturday (April 14), with tickets now available.

Steve has been performing for more than 30 years, and after starting as a drummer, he worked as a blues guitarist in various bands by his late teens.

Later he reinvented himself as a bebop saxophonist, appearing in many London clubs and memorably sharing the bandstand with ex-Charlie Parker trumpeter Red Rodney.

Tickets to the gig – where refreshments will be on sale and a licensed bar is available – cost £6 (children free) and can be reserved by visiting the library, in High Street, calling 0121 559 1884, or emailing blackheath_library@sandwell.gov.uk.

Doors open at 6.30pm.
