MOVIE legend Michael Winslow - best known for playing Sgt ‘Motor Mouth’ Jones in the Police Academy films of the 1980s - will be stopping off in the Black Country as part of his first-ever UK tour.

Following the success of his 2011 critically-acclaimed Edinburgh Fringe show The Man of 10,000 Voices, the American star who can imitate the impossible using just his voice is bringing the one-man production to towns and cities across the country.

The show, which ran for a month at the prestigious arts festival, received rave reviews and proved a complete sell-out.

It now looks set to go down a storm when it stops off at Wolverhampton Civic Hall this Sunday (May 27) and Birmingham Town Hall on Wednesday June 6.

Winslow, who can mimic almost anything from Jimmy Hendrix’s frenzied guitar playing to sound effects from the Star Wars movies, was born in 1958 on Fairchild Air Force Base, Washington, where he would imitate airplanes landing and taking off.

But it was when he received rapturous applause for an impromptu impression of Jimmy Hendrix that he did at Tulagi’s, Colarado, that he realised his calling.

While living homeless at Venice Beach in California, Michael auditioned for the Gong Show hosted by Chuck Barris - and soon afterwards he began performing in LA comedy clubs where he was discovered by Bud Friedman, founder of the New York Improvisation Comedy Club and responsible for launching the careers of the likes of Bette Midler, Andy Kaufman and Jay Leno.

Friedman featured Michael in Evening at the Improv and in 1984 producers Hugh Wilson and Paul Manslanski noticed his talent and immediately wrote him into the script of the legendary Police Academy movies.

Winslow later went on to provide the voice of Stripe in Stephen Spielberg’s Gremlins and to star in National Lampoon’s Robo Doc and Mel Brooks’ Spaceballs.

His vocals have also featured Family Guy, King Of The Hill! and Robot Chicken and there’s talk he may reprise the movie role that made him famous as Nu Line Cinema have announced another Police Academy movie is in the offing.
