A female solo artist has topped the UK singles chart this week for the first time in nearly two years.

Dua Lipa has grabbed the top position with single New Rules, which jumped from fifth to first position this week.

The 21-year-old London-born singer is the first female to top the UK singles chart since Adele held the top position with Hello in October 2015, according to the Official Charts Company.

Lipa told OfficialCharts.com: “Thank you so much for supporting New Rules – we are officially number one!

“Thank you for sharing it with all your friends, for streaming it, for downloading it. I love you, this means a lot to me.”

She has previously had two songs in the Top 10 – No Lie (a collaboration with Sean Paul) and Be The One – the latter of of which is from her self-titled debut album which was released in June this year.

Phil Christie, president of Warner Bros. Records in the UK, said: “Dua’s talent has never been in any doubt. A number one single at this stage in the campaign is a hugely significant milestone on the road to her becoming a global pop star.

“It’s the result of three years of hard work and creativity from Dua, Ben and the team at Tap Management, and the whole of WB Records.”

Last week’s number one on the single charts, Feels, from Scottish DJ Calvin Harris and featuring Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry and Big Sean, drops down to second position.

A new entry in fifth spot comes from P!nk and her single What About Us.

Ed Sheeran continued his chart domination as he denied the late Elvis Presley the chance to continue his record for the most number one albums by a solo artist, the Official Chart Company has said.

Sheeran’s Divide racked up its 15th non-consecutive week at the top of the UK albums chart.

The singer’s third studio album beat a new Presley compilation of The 50 Greatest Hits by 35 combined sales, even though Presley’s was the most physically bought this week.
