A STOURBRIDGE youngster is set to play the starring role in Bridgnorth Musical Theatre Company’s production of Oliver.

Greenfield Primary School pupil George Westley-Smith, 9, has landed the title role in the show, which is being held at Bridgnorth Leisure Centre from February 17 to 21.

Alison Pipe, spokeswoman for the theatre company, said: “George is only 9 years old and is an amazingly talented young lad who has a wonderful singing voice and stage presence.

“He was chosen for Bridgnorth Musical Theatre Company’s star part at an audition from over 30 children, which is an incredible achievement in one so young.”

George currently lives in Stourbridge with his mum and dad, as well as his sister Isabelle, who also treads the boards, having performed in local productions of The Sound of Music and Annie.

Since September, he has spent two nights a week in Bridgnorth rehearsing for the production, under the tutelage of producer Mike James.

However, this will not be George’s first time playing the part of Oliver, after he starred in the same role with Wolverhampton-based Phoenix Theatre Company in February 2014.

Tickets for the show, costing £15, are available now by calling the box office on 01746 761541.
