A REGULAR night of stand-up in Stourbridge is in the running to be crowned ‘Best Comedy Club’ in the Midlands.

Fitz of Laughter Comedy Club, based at Wollaston venue Katie Fitzgerald’s, is the only club in the Black Country to make the shortlist for the annual Midlands Comedy Awards.

Among some the club’s competitors for the award are the might of Birmingham and Nottingham’s Glee clubs.

The popular Stourbridge club has also been nominated in the ‘Best Small Comedy Club’ category – for venues with 100 seats or less.

And to complete the hat-trick, resident compere Wayne Beese, who also runs and promotes the night, has been put forward as ‘Best MC’.

Dudley comic Wayne, 36, said he was absolutely delighted. He added: “It's fantastic news. We have worked hard to get the club off the ground the last couple of years and we regularly get great feedback from both audiences and acts alike.

“To be nominated for awards are just the icing on the cake.

“It shows we are doing something right, and we will continue working hard to bring the best acts to Katie's and putting on the best nights we can, win or lose.”

The awards are being decided by public vote and people have until midnight on Sunday (November 20) to vote.

The club, which runs on the first Friday of every month in the marquee at the Enville Street venue, has been packed to the rafters for every show this year.

Featuring character comedian Tom Binns, the next club night on December 2 sold out within days of going on sale.

The club has also played host to a number of circuit headliners this year including Gary Delaney, Zoe Lyons, John Robertson, Nathan Caton, Barbara Nice, Sean Percival, Patrick Monahan, Jonny Cole, Paul McCaffrey, Roger Monkhouse and Steve Gribbin.

Tom Stade, Jo Enright, Archie Kelly, Iain Stirling and Matt Richardson have also performed at the club.
