The Birmingham Repertory Theatre is throwing open its doors this weekend to give residents a once-in-a-lifetime chance to go behind the scenes.
The free event this Saturday, June 20, from 11am until 4pm will allow visitors to gain a rare insight into what happens on and off stage at the theatre which hosts 450 performances to an audience of 100,000 every year.
Members of the public will be able to step out of the wings on to the main stage, find out how sets are built and see demonstrations from the lighting, wigs and wardrobe departments.
Visitors will also be able to see how a show is created from start to finish.
Actress Sharon D Clarke, known for her leading West End roles and appearances on Holby City and Last Choir Standing, will also be on hand during the day as she leads a singing masterclass for members of the theatre’s youth theatre, The Young REP.
Sharon is currently starring in The REP’s summer musical, Once On This Island.
The open day will also include a costume and props sale, playwriting workshop, storytelling and performance poetry.
And visitors will be able to undergo a makeover with a difference complete with gruesome scars in the Special Effects Makeup Scar Bar.
Nigel Cairns, Theatre Manager said: “The open day is a great day out for all the family.
“There’ll be something for everyone whether they are a regular theatre-goer or someone who has never been inside a theatre before.
“And who knows you might even pick up a piece of theatrical history in our costume and props sale.”
Admission is FREE for everybody.
