AFTER years of extensive consultation by campaigners, plans for speedway's return to the borough have now been submitted to the council - ending months of speculation and rumour over its new location.
For more than ten years, speedway supporters have eagerly awaited its return following the closure of the Heathens' Dudley Wood home in 1995 for a housing development.
Members of Cradley Raising Aid Saving Heathens (CRASH) have worked tirelessly for 12 years to bring back the popular sport. After working with a team of private surveyors and Dudley Council, looking at sites across the borough, the campaign group have finally submitted an application for their new base to be on green belt land off Oldnall Road between Cradley and Wollescote.
Bob Edwards of CRASH said: "At long last, we have a real opportunity to put the borough back on the regional, national and international sporting maps.
"We have done all we can to get Dudley's most successful and best supported sports team back on its feet and bring the glory days back to the borough.
"Now it is down to the council to give us the permission we need to complete the job."
The proposals are set to show the similarity of the new site to the former home of Dudley Wood. Detailed architect drawings will show a circuit similar in size and shape to the much loved old track.
Bob said: "The proposal is to stage speedway racing, mainly on Saturdays, on 30 nights per year.
"There are usually 15 one-minute races per meeting.
"Speedway bikes are fitted with silencers.
"There will be no large football style stands or floodlight pylons and the majority of the development will be located behind grassed banks to screen it."
Over the last few months campaigners have been urging fans to sign a petition, which will be handed to council planners to show the level of support for the Heathens return to the borough. To date nearly 5,000 signatures from all over the world have been collected through various online and paper-based petitions.
After the News reported the exact location in August, a website poll also revealed overwhelming support for the Heathens setting up shop on green belt off Oldnall Road with 92.6 per cent backing proposals.
Dudley Council confirmed it had received the information.
A spokesman said: "Planning officers will be looking through it to see if the information meets the requirements for a valid application."
