AFTER years of extensive consultation by campaigners, plans for speedway's return to the borough have now been submitted to the council - ending months of speculation and rumour over its new location.

For more than ten years, speedway supporters have eagerly awaited its return following the closure of the Heathens' Dudley Wood home in 1995 for a housing development.

Members of Cradley Raising Aid Saving Heathens (CRASH) have worked tirelessly for 12 years to bring back the popular sport. After working with a team of private surveyors and Dudley Council, looking at sites across the borough, the campaign group have finally submitted an application for their new base to be on green belt land off Oldnall Road between Cradley and Wollescote.

Bob Edwards of CRASH said: "At long last, we have a real opportunity to put the borough back on the regional, national and international sporting maps.

"We have done all we can to get Dudley's most successful and best supported sports team back on its feet and bring the glory days back to the borough.

"Now it is down to the council to give us the permission we need to complete the job."

The proposals are set to show the similarity of the new site to the former home of Dudley Wood. Detailed architect drawings will show a circuit similar in size and shape to the much loved old track.

Bob said: "The proposal is to stage speedway racing, mainly on Saturdays, on 30 nights per year.

"There are usually 15 one-minute races per meeting.

"Speedway bikes are fitted with silencers.

"There will be no large football style stands or floodlight pylons and the majority of the development will be located behind grassed banks to screen it."

Over the last few months campaigners have been urging fans to sign a petition, which will be handed to council planners to show the level of support for the Heathens return to the borough. To date nearly 5,000 signatures from all over the world have been collected through various online and paper-based petitions.

After the News reported the exact location in August, a website poll also revealed overwhelming support for the Heathens setting up shop on green belt off Oldnall Road with 92.6 per cent backing proposals.

Dudley Council confirmed it had received the information.

A spokesman said: "Planning officers will be looking through it to see if the information meets the requirements for a valid application."

92.6 per cent backing the proposal has anybody ask the residentsof the local area NO we dont want the speedway with the noise, light pollution, parking, litter, also this is green belt land and it should stay green belt land

I totally agree with you mary. The people who want this so badly are the people that do not live near the site where they want to put it. No skin off their noses, no traffic problems, no noise pollution. Perhaps this should be located to Dudley town centre where it could generate more business and be centralised. Also green belt land should remain green belt land.

I do not agree with the above; smae old same old nothing new to say and very, very selective with the facts. Ignoring the fact that the area will remain greenbelt the application satifies all requirements and ticks all the boxes to address comments like these. Think Stourbridge rugby club Stourbridge Tennis Club, Halesowen Cycling and Athletics Club shall I go on ...ALL MAKE A POSTIVE CONTRIBUTION there are ohers ...... Although to compare with this site is doing this application a disservice as it is no where near the same scale. The same old concerns are repeated and have been addressed time after time as people following this story will already be aware. I am confident that the plans submitted are fully compliant with all the relevant legislation and that the concerns voiced taken into account. All points Daisy raises have been appraised/challenged and remedial actions evaluated by independant EXPERTS in a totally objective manner.

The area in question (I know it very well already suffers from some of the problems mentioned Cradley speedway would effectively provide a solution to these e.g. litter and general missuse of the land. A positive outcome would benefit local communities and businesses alike. Time to take the blinkers off Daisy.

Cradley speedway have taken many years complying with everything required of them and have gone the extra mile - hopefully the final outcome will not come down to personal prejudices. I hope that Dudley Borough grasp this excellent opportunity with both hands and did the right thing.

How is a worldwide petition relevent, when talking about something that is going to impact on peoples homes. Do many people in favour of the speedway live near the proposed site? I very much doubt it. WE DO AND DO NOT WANT IT.
We live in a nice quiet area with beautiful countryside - all that WILL change if this goes ahead. There will be noise pollution, large crowds of people from out of the area who will have little or no respect for the area. Increased traffic; it will be a nightmare on the lanes around here.
I would also like to respond to Tonys comments of same old same old, very selective of relevent facts etc. Have you considered that maybe the same comments keep coming up because there are very few people throughout the country (who live in a quiet area) that would be happy to have a speedway racetrack built on their doorstep. I consider it a very relevent fact that its being built on greenbelt land; the purpose of greenbelts is to stop developments sprawling out into the countryside - this is a blooming big development. The track itself, carparks etc etc. it is going to completely dominate, change the character and use of the area. We have a football club about 200 yards away from our house I would much rather hear them shouting and chearing than hear however many motorbikes roaring 500 meters away. I dont think football, rugby, cycling and athletics can be viewed in quite the same light - surely the silencers on racing bikes will only muffle the sound to that of a normal motorbike, also there will be more spectators there than at other local sporting venues. Especially with the sky coverage. I agree completely with Daisy & Mary; I dont think any resident who objects to this is blinkered, we would have to be pretty stupid to not realise the impact this will have on our families, homelives, community & property value.

Also which problem mentioned do we already suffer from please?

I for one will be absolutely gutted if this is allowed - mainly that the sound pollution generated from lets remember a green belt site will have a detrimental effect on the house prices in the vaccinity. Are local homeowners to expect a compensation package for this? I must also report that the 'plan' recently posted through my letter box included a sketch of the site wherby they have blatently misguided the public by drawing it the wrong way round!!! If this is truly an honest mistake should we trust them to get anything correct if the plans are to be given the go-ahead?? I would like to pose a question to our council head - would you allow a speedway in your backgarden (I believe Kingswinford need a team!)
Oh well at least we can all look forward to getting a lovely burger from one of the many shacks we will see on our pavements! I like the speedway and used to go to the old site as a kid and feel sorry that the Heathens do not have a stadium but please not on my doorstep thanks.

I would also very much like to ask a question to English Tone - 'Where do you live?' Is it next to a speedway????

The comment 'The area in question (I know it very well already suffers from some of the problems mentioned' - Beggars belief - it is prejudice like this that is not acceptable as i assume you cannot back this up! I do note these comments as although you feel you are being 'clever' your next comment totally sums up your argument -

'I might also add hopefully the final outcome will not come down to personal prejudices.'

Wow i think they call that kettle and black!

NOT IN MY BACKYARD!!!

I have to address a point raised, above, by kevb1980.

The plan was drawn up by the architect, not by anyone directly related to the speedway club.

There's no right or wrong way up for a map or plan. It just depends on the view point you have. I'm told, although I stand to be corrected, that the plan has been drawn with north at the top of the page. Is that not what one would expect?

I live as the crow flies 500yrds away. I too had worries about the points being rasied but every one has been answered and addressed. Noise this will be managed to within levels of the regular traffic.

Visual impact - the track will not be visible and with planting neither will parking facility.

I am not trying to be clever, just a bit feed up when statments are made without checking things in more detail thats all.

The probelms I mention well if you are local you will know them already A facility that other can use Junior football for example.
I know that these guys have looked and presented a case for a number of alternative sites so maybe and no decison has been made people should direct some of their question to Dudley who have avoided, this issue for 12 years. Speedway is (or was) the one single sporting club the region can be proud of - but like everything these days Tradition and Local Pride seem to be dirty words.

The personal prejudice comment is simply to say - IF this application meets all the required legislation (noise, pollution, traffic safety) INCLUDING green belt restriction (I agree with these) then on what basis can the appliaction be rejected? Other than personal stuff - I always thought the needs of the many outweighed the needs of the few?

Putting stuff in Bold does not make you right.

I only live a near this site and i am all for the building of the speedway stadium. Speedway is a fmily sports where away fans mix with home and there no trouble.

I think that people in the local area just need to deal in facts and not what they think is going to happen. things are been put in place to address the issues that people are bring up and they are just not paying attention.

Just look at the brummies return to the sport. I think that people should look at the bigger picture.

David

In reply to your unsolicited email.

If you had indeed noticed my comments I think its pretty clear that I am all in favour of this application.

I will not attempt to convince you otherwise but simply point out that despite numerous alternative site suggestions it is DBC that have through (in my view) their blinkered approach resulted in an application being submitted for this site. A deliberate ploy in the hope that because of the challenges presented the application would simply wither and die perhaps?

Quite the contrary because having made clear precisely their reservation the speedway simply had to address them and this they have clearly done.

Prior to submitting the bid and in order to meet everything the DBC required of them; including compliance with Green Belt policies (have the no camp actually done their research?), other relevant legislation (noise/pollution/env
ironmental/geologica
l-archaeological/soc
ial/economic) and have through their fundraising efforts and generous support where ever necessary, so as to avoid any doubt commissioned independent and expert advice acting at all times reasonably

I am firmly in the camp of being totally fed up with the absolute nonsense, emotive language, scare tactics being employed, perhaps not by yourself but certainly others associated with the "no thank you" camp. This includes a number of local councillors who for their own very obvious reasons and self interests are equally guilty of this and have and continue to be very selective with their advice.

I have to say any chance of "winning me over" was lost some time ago; despite the reasonable and genuine concerns voiced by some the utter nonsense posted by others associated with your campaign is at best ill judged, does you (by association) no credit. Compare this with the open, honest and very professional way the application team have responded. Your emailing me serves only to reaffirm my view.

Regards
