Solicitor's charity booze ban

A STOURBRIDGE solicitor hopes staying off the bottle throughout January will help raise cash for disabled kids.
Martyn Morgan of Talbots came up with the idea to give up booze for the month - and give the money normally spent on alcohol to charity.
Three years ago a similar stunt helped raise money for the News Group's tsunami appeal to help rebuild a school in Phuket - and this year the big-hearted legal eagle hopes to boost funds for Stourbridge's Chris Westwood Charity for Handicapped Children with Physical Disabilities.
The 52-year-old senior partner, whose friends are planning to join in with the month-long booze ban, plans to donate £10 a day for abstaining from alcohol - and £20 for any day that he defaults.
He said: "This idea arose out of a meeting between a bunch of lads in the pub regarding the excesses of Christmas.
"Each year we vow to go alcohol free for the month of January - and for some of us that's a big ask!"
Martyn hopes together with his pals to raise around £1,500 for the cause - of which he is a trustee.
He is also encouraging work colleagues to follow suit, adding: "The sin' could be anything - e.g. abstaining from alcohol, smoking, chocolate or all three.
"Or it might be something completely different, such as swearing, or going to the gym on a daily basis.
"The amount can be as little as £1 per day or as much as people wish to pledge."
The Chris Westwood Charity has to date made donations to a host of needy children across the borough including Kingswinford youngster Oscar Fradgley, who was born with no hands and feet, Ellie Bishop from Rowley Regis - who lost her hands and feet to meningitis, and prematurely-born Wollaston tot Huw Weston who suffers from heart, lung and stomach problems.
