O negative blood donors needed to help replenish low stocks

DUDLEY residents who have a blood group of O Rh negative (O-) are being urged to come forward and donate next week.

Following a dip in blood stocks due to less donations around the festive period and the recent norovirus outbreak, O-negative donors are especially needed to help replenish stocks in borough hospitals following a recent high demand for the blood type.

Only seven per cent of the populations have this particular blood group, with these donors known as the ‘universal donor’ as their blood can be given to patients with a different blood group, which can prove vital in an emergency situation.

The NHS Blood and Transplant team will be at the Ladies Walk Community Centre in Sedgley on Friday January 11 from 12.30pm until 3pm and again from 4pm until 6.30pm.

Anyone aged between 17 and 65, who weighs more than seven stone 12lbs and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor for the first time.
