New refuse bins to be wheeled out across the borough

NEW bins are set to be wheeled out across the borough by Dudley Council to replace the current black bin sacks.

The wheelie bins were given the approval at lasy night's (Tuesday) cabinet meeting and will be used for non-recycle household waste.

It is hoped the extra bin, similar to the current green wheelie bin for garden waste, will improve the authority’s kerbside collection service.

The bins will be distributed later this year, alongside two new reusable recycling bags – one blue and one green – for plastic bottles and cardboard recycling, after a recent trial proved to be a huge success.

The current black recycling boxes can continue to be used to collect glass bottles and jars, blue bags will be for paper and card while the green bags will be for plastic bottles and cans.

Councillor Tracy Wood, cabinet member for environment and culture, said: “Providing a wheelie bin service will enable us to make more efficient collections while reducing the risk of bags splitting or being ripped open by animals.

“The new bins will be financed through savings from the sack service and will be complemented by improvements to our kerbside collection.”

Matt Williams, Assistant Director for Environment, also informed those attending the Netherton, Woodside and St Andrews and Quarry Bank and Dudley Wood community forum that the council will be carrying out assessments on households where a wheelie refuse bin would prove difficult, including the elderly and disabled, who will be given an option of keeping the black liners.
