A WOMAN has died after a blaze at a flat in Stourbridge this morning (Friday March 22).

West Midlands Ambulance Service was called to Baylie Court, Green Street, shortly after 10am.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “When paramedics arrived they found the fire service tackling a blaze in a flat.

“Sadly, nothing could be done to save a woman found inside the property and she was confirmed dead at the scene.”

A spokesman from West Midlands Fire Service said: "Fire appliances from Brierley Hill, Cradley Heath and Dudley Community Fire Stations were sent to the scene and on arrival, crews discovered a fire in the living room of a tenth floor flat within the 15-storey block.

"The fire had caused approximately 15 per cent damage, but was confined to the room of origin and four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the blaze using two jets.

"During a search of the property, firefighters discovered a woman - believed to be 63 years old - sadly deceased."

A joint fire and police investigation into the cause of the blaze is underway.
