A STOURBRIDGE student needs help to fund a Kenyan adventure.

Bethany Read, who is studying at King Edward VI College, will spend five weeks in the slums of Nairobi, Kenya, working in an orphanage.

The 17-year-old will live in a tin shelter and support children who have lost their parents to diseases such as AIDS or whose families couldn’t afford to keep them.

Bethany has arranged the trip though Outreach International, a company that co-ordinates volunteer projects abroad.

She admitted she was nervous about the trip but keen to help those less fortunate.

She said: “Simply seeing the children in such poor conditions and knowing that I have the opportunity to help in some way was enough to convince me to go.

“The idea of this adventure scares me but I think it will be a massive learning curve for me.”

But the expedition does not come without cost; the teenager from Claverley, Shropshire, needs to raise £2,750.

She has already raised £1,500 through coffee mornings, college parties and car boot sales but is relying on donations to help reach her target.
