Funeral date set for Quarry Bank lorry victim Sartaj
10:33am Tuesday 17th September 2013 in News
THE funeral of the Stourbridge man killed when he was hit by a lorry in Quarry Bank will take place tomorrow (Wednesday September 18).
Sartaj Aziz, aged 26, of Prescot Road, was struck by a HGV in Thorns Road on Tuesday August 20.
Shocked by the tragedy the borough’s Muslim community had donated money to pay for the funeral of the father-of-two, known as Taj, as his only close relative living locally is his mother who has been left utterly distraught.
Since his death, Lye councillor Mohammed Hanif has liaised with Mr Aziz’s mother and helped to organise the funeral, which will be held at Ghausia Mosque in Lye at 2.30pm, followed by a burial at Brierley Hill Cemetery.
Cllr Hanif said: “I am expecting a good turnout. We announced it in mosques and community centres and to all of his friends and so on.”
He added that anyone is welcome to attend but as it is an Islamic funeral, female mourners are asked to cover their heads with a scarf as a mark of respect.
The death of Mr Aziz, who previously worked in the control room for Stourbridge taxi firm ABM, is being treated as manslaughter.
Garret Fitzpatrick, aged 27, from Brierley Hill, has been remanded in custody in connection with the incident and will face trial in February next year.
