Dudley residents warned to be alert for council tax cash scam
9:00am Sunday 6th October 2013 in News
DUDLEY Borough council tax payers are being urged to be on their guard against fraudsters claiming to save them cash.
The council has had a total of ten complaints from people who have been approached by companies claiming they can get a reduction in bills by getting properties place in a lower tax band.
The companies charge an initial, non-refundable, fee of £200 plus a percentage of any money recovered.
The authority says it has had no appeals from any companies to reband properties and is reminding people an appeal can result in a property going into a higher band - which would mean a higher charge.
Councillor Tracy Wood, Dudley cabinet member for environment and culture, said: “People need to be aware that they could end up paying more, and there are no guarantees the band will change.
“If people are thinking about reviewing the band they are on, or are struggling to pay their council tax, I would advise them to speak to the council rather than third party companies.”
Householders can apply to review their council tax band directly with the Valuation Office Agency with any reduction going directly to the resident.
