More than 5,000 people apply for Stourbridge Tesco jobs
2:00pm Tuesday 15th October 2013 in News
MORE than 5,000 people applied for 350 jobs on offer at Stourbridge's new Tesco superstore, supermarket bosses revealed this week.
Tesco's recruitment team say they received almost 15 applications for every one of the vacancies at the soon-to-open Tesco Extra store, on Crown Lane.
More than 1,500 people were interviewed for the new roles which range from team leaders to fishmongers to customer assistants.
One hundred of the new recruits took part in a Regeneration Partnership programme which ring-fenced a number of available jobs for the long-term unemployed - and 45 posts have gone to young people keen to get their first foot on the employment ladder. Other successful candidates include ex-servicemen, a nurse, a builder and a car salesman.
New store manager, Sadie Griffiths, who has worked for Tesco for 18 years, said she was "absolutely delighted" with the chosen team members who are now busy getting the store ready for its grand opening at 8am on Thursday October 31.
She added: "I am particularly proud of the members who recently graduated from their training course and secured a job for the first time in six months or more.
“We hope the store will become an integral part of the local community."
Another 50 jobs are also expected to be created at other units surrounding the Tesco store, in a newly-built mall area which replaces the old Crown Centre and links the new supermarket with Stourbridge Library and the town hall.
The two-storey 65,000 sq ft store, which will include meat, fish, deli and pizza counters, an olive bar, bakery, opticians, pharmacy service, clothing department and in-store phone shop, will be open 24 hours most days, until midnight on Saturdays and from 10am to 4pm on Sundays.
