Stourbridge MP secures debate on children's centres

Stourbridge News: Stourbridge MP Margot James Stourbridge MP Margot James

STOURBRIDGE MP Margot James has secured a debate in Parliament to discuss the future of children’s centres across the borough.

Although the closure-threatened children's centres received a reprieve fromDudley Council, the MP says she has continued to be contacted by parents who remain worried about the long-term future of the popular service.

After meeting with parents and managers fromHob Green, Peter’s Hill, and Quarry Bank Children's Centres which were earmarked for closure, Ms James applied for a debate in Parliament which is now due to take place in Westminster Hall tomorrow (Wednesday December 11) at 4.30pm.

The MP said: “I am delighted to have secured a parliamentary debate about our local children’s centres, as it is important that we seriously consider how best to safeguard their future.

"Children’s centres play a vital role in supporting families and the wider community when it comes to improving the life chances of young children."

She added: "I would like to thank all the local parents and staff at the centres who took time to meet me, as well as those parents who contacted me to share their stories.

"We are all very pleased with the withdrawal of the initial proposals, but many are still concerned about whether the children’s centres service will be protected so I will continue to do what I can to support those centres in my constituency.”

Heather Cheslin, parent and a member of “Friends of Hob Green” which has been campaigning on behalf of Hob Green Children’s Centre, added: “Children’s centres are at the heart of our community.

"They offer essential support for young families and relieve the pressure from other public services.

"I have been campaigning for the children’s centres in Stourbridge and the debate that Margot has secured in Parliament will make sure that this issue is not ignored."
