Midnight opening hours return to Merry Hill

LAST-MINUTE festive shoppers can hunt for gifts until midnight at Merry Hill from today (Thursday).

The Westfield shopping mall will be open until the witching hour tonight (Thursday December 19), Friday December 20, Saturday December 21 and Monday December 23 – giving customers chance to grab late-in-the-day gifts.

The centre, which will also be open from 9am to 5pm on Christmas Eve - Tuesday December 24, will be closed only on Christmas Day.

It will re-open on Boxing Day (9am to 6pm) and extended opening hours will apply on Friday December 27 giving customers chance to snap up bargains in the sales from 8am to 9pm.

During the final festive shopping days and the first few days of the sales a shuttle bus will ferry shoppers from the Waterfront business park to the centre on weekdays up until Christmas Eve and from December 26 to 29.

Kelly Reed, senior marketing manager of Westfield Merry Hill said: “It can be a manic time for everyone, so we’re staying open even later and providing the shuttle bus to make Christmas shopping that bit easier and more enjoyable for our customers."

What about making it easier for local residents? Is it reall necessary to open till midnight? And how about closing on boxing day to let the people of Quarry Bank and Brierley Hill get a break from the non-stop traffic whilst they try and get round their families. Not forgetting the poor shop workers who can't enjoy Christmas because they have to be up early to get ready for the boxing day business.

I hate it. This is my 7th Christmas at Merry Hell. It's unfair, nobody wants to work with nasty shoppers until midnight. People have no manners, are very rude, and get very uppity if you don't have what they want three days before Christmas. I can't wait for Christmas to be over, the midnight shifts ruin it for me... That and people who don't think before they speak when they're shopping. Bah humbug!

I don't see why people are up there at 11:45. Maybe the odd person has an excuse, but can anyone genuinely say they're busy 9am-11pm!? Why leave it to the last minute!? I buy all presents in November, because I have no Christmas cheer when working in the centre and to be fair, I hate Christmas shoppers, they're the most selfish and nasty people around.
I an see why it would affect local people, with all the lines of traffic everywhere. Westfield are just money grabbers and don't think about how their actions affect anyone!
