PUPILS and teachers at a Stourbridge school have celebrated gaining Fairtrade status for their efforts in promoting the humanitarian cause.

For the past two years, youngsters from across Oldswinford Primary School have been doing their bit to raise awareness of the Fairtrade Foundation.

Their efforts paid off as it is now the second Fairtrade accredited school in the borough, joining St James C of E Primary in Wollaston.

The international organisation fights for better working conditions and fairer pay for farmers and workers in the developing world.

They have shown their commitment by setting up a Fairtrade steering group, adopting a Fairtrade policy and committing to using products in the school for meetings and in cookery classes.

Students have documented the process with photos, articles, newsletters, posters, paintings and collages as part of the submission process to the foundation.

Headteacher Ross Workman said: "I am delighted that our school has achieved this award. Fairness and justice are great concerns of children and it has been really encouraging to see how committed our children have become to spreading the news. I am really grateful to all the governors, staff and children who have worked so hard on this."
