Kingswinford couple opt for a Shrek themed wedding

SHREK and Princess Fiona swapped the swamp for Dudley's Priory Hall as they dedicated their fairytale wedding to Cancer Research UK.

Kingswinford couple Nathan Gibbs, aged 39, and Amanda Billington, aged 44, dressed up as the famous ogres to say "I do" on Saturday.

They said their vows in front of guests including Mr T, Captain Jack Sparrow and Snow White as their family and friends also raided the fancy dress box for the big day.

Mr Gibbs told the News that after eight years together, they thought it was time to tie the knot and their unusual wedding was inspired by a long running joke.

He said: "I've always said I'd give her the fairytale wedding if she married me and she said, in our fairytale, we'd be Shrek and Princess Fiona."

The couple, who run ironing service, The Iron Maidens, in Kingswinford, were originally going to have a modest ceremony but after losing seven customers to cancer in the past year, they decided to push the boat out and use their special day to raise funds for the charity.

Their decision to ask guests to donate cash to the charity rather than buy them gifts, was even more poignant, as days later, Mr Gibbs discovered his sister had been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Mr Gibbs said he was delighted that they had raised more than £1,000 and donations were still coming in.

He added: "We had an amazing day, our fairytale definitely came true. I’d like to thank everyone sponsored us and helped us along the way to make it both a fantastic day for us."

Jennifer McLachlan, central fundraising executive at Cancer Research UK, said: "This is the first time that we've come across such a unique way to raise money for us and I'd like to thank Nathan and Amanda for their amazing support."
