A WOLLASTON man has vowed to grow a beard for a year to raise money in memory of his father.

James Firkins, aged 25, of Leonard Road, had his last shave on New Year’s Day and admitted he is curious to see how long his beard will get.

All of the donations he receives during his year-long challenge will go to Mary Stevens Hospice.

The charity is close to his heart as it is where his father, David, was cared for at the end of his battle with pancreatic cancer in 2010.

James, who works Scary Canary Clothing in Stourbridge, said: “I feel it is due time that I contributed more for Mary Stevens in my father's name. The hospice helped my dad live out his last days with dignity and comfort.

“Sitting in their garden listening to Pink Floyd in the sun will be one of my greatest memories.

“By raising money, others may have the chance to create amazing parting memories with their loved ones.”

He added: “I have had stubble and small beards before, but nothing that lasted longer than five months at a time. I've always wanted to see what I looked like with a huge beard.”

James hopes to raise £1,000 and is optimistic that he will reach his target as he raised £65 on the first day.
