TWO daring Stourbridge supermarket workers have raised more than £2,000 for charity after having their locks chopped off in front of bemused shoppers.

Deborah Smith and Lisa 'Tink' Cope from Sainsburys Amblecote had their heads shaved in-store on Friday January 31 to help rake in cash for the Georgina Unit which treats borough cancer patients at Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley.

Hairdressers Catherine O'Rourke and Pam McBride from on-site hairdressers Elliot Reece carried out the headshave free of charge to help the pair raise the maximum amount for their chosen cause.

Deborah, a counter assistant on the pharmacy department, said: “I'm amazed and extremely humbled by the support shown. What we did is easy compared to someone who is battling cancer; this is our way of making their lives that little bit easier. The generosity of colleagues and customers from Sainsbury’s Amblecote has brought us both close to tears.”

Lisa, a team leader on customer services, added: "We decided to do this fundraising to say thank you to the dedicated nursing staff on the Georgina Unit, who cared for our loved ones undergoing treatment."

Karen Phillips, fundraising manager for the hospital charity, said the response from customers and fellow staff at the supermarket had been overwhelming and added: "The charity is so grateful to Deb and Lisa for doing such a marvellous thing.”
