STOURBRIDGE Rugby Club is shaping up to stage one of the biggest festivals ever seen at its Stourton Park headquarters next month.

The club's Mini and Junior section celebrate their 40th anniversary this year and it is hosting a spectacular on Sunday April 6 to mark the occasion.

A host of clubs have been invited to attend with teams from Kidderminster Carolians, Newport Shropshire, Worcester, Old Silhillians, Bromyard, Bridgnorth, Kings Norton, Droitwich, Bromsgrove Chaddesley Corbett, Willenhall and Telford Hornets, along with hosts Stourbridge expected to take part.

Spokesman Ian Shergold said: "We're expecting between 500 and 600 youngsters taking part alone.

"It's the third year we've staged the festival, but this one will be much bigger owing to the fact we've included under 11 and under 12 sides as well."

As a result, competition ranges from under-7's right through to under 12's.

The event kicks off with a display from the Micro's, which comprises of four-year-olds, and Ian Shergold said: "The objective is to get them hooked on rugby from a very young age.

"This is one of the premier events we've ever organised. We've staged the under-13's North Midlands Cup, but this is probably going to be much bigger."

Apart from the rugby, the club is also staging an arts and crafts market on the car park behind the clubhouse.

Ian Shergold added: "All funds raised from the festival will go towards the upkeep of the club."

There will be a programme produced for the occasion and if anyone is interested in helping to sponsor the event they can contact Mr Shergold on 07968 544470.
