Plans for an Islamic education centre in Lye approved

Stourbridge News: The Old Bell will be transformed into an Islamic education centre. The Old Bell will be transformed into an Islamic education centre.

A FORMER Lye pub will be transformed into an Islamic education centre after Dudley planners gave the go-ahead.

The Old Bell on Chapel Street will soon be the venue for weekly Qur'an classes and a range of other activities to meet the "social, spiritual and educational needs of the community" through a range of "lifestyle studies and personal development programmes".

The application, submitted by Rashid Aziz on behalf of the Islamic Community and Education Centre, was approved by members of Dudley Council's Development Control Committee at a meeting earlier this month.

The charitable trust aims to work with local schools and neighbourhood watch schemes, raise awareness of cultural diversity and offer sports sessions and counselling and advisory services.

In his application, Mr Aziz said: "In due course we hope to establish a lasting relationship with faith and non-faith communities, as well as statutory organisations and civil bodies.

"We passionately believe in working with all sections of society irrespective of their race, faith, social background, disability or any other identity."

Prior to making the decision, the council received dozens of letters from members of the public, offering their support for the application.

Uzma Gondal said: “A proposal such as this is long overdue for the Lye community and is much needed. This application will aid the regeneration of Lye town centre and will prevent yet another building being left vacant.”

Aamar Nawaz added: “The multi-cultural community in Lye and the surrounding area really requires a centre of this type. For one we need to harmonise community relations in the area and there is an urgent need to get the kids off the street.”

Conditions of the approval include a revised car park layout, which would include disabled bays and a pick up and drop off area.

I have to disagree with knockoffnigel, I have a number of muslim friends that integrate very well in the community and the vast majority of 'asians' aren't even muslim so you can't go making a broad statement that Asians do not really integrate with other cultures.

So the" multicutural " community needs a place of worship , for muslims. This only goes to foster the theocratic belief system which does not embrace multiculturalism at all. Its doctrine of intolerance of other beliefs, apostasy, and the final solution for everyone is ensconced in the totalitarianism. I for one have no desire to be ruled by by a theocracy overseen by by a celestial dictator! I have no objection to the building being a mosque, but please at least be honest about it, it is for the alleged minority and hence is not a place of multiculturalism now is it. Perhaps we should accept that multiculturalism does not work, what is so wrong with that?

First of all, it's 'their beliefs' not 'there beliefs'. Also, unless you've lead an extremely sheltered existence (and your command of the English language suggests that this is so) you probably have spoken to an Asian man's wife at some point; they're rather common in the Midlands. Lastly, if you really have a burning desire to talk to Muslim people about the Bible I imagine you would fond a large number of them would be perfectly friendly and happy to have a conversation about the Bible. In fact, you may be interested to know that a lot of Bible stories are also in the Qur'an.

Bible, Qu,ran, Torah, have one glaringly obvious issue. They are all produced by human beings! they all make fantastical claims with absolutely no evidence whatsoever! Surely fantastic claims require fantastic evidence! Blind faith or blind stupidity you choose. Religions only evidence is history! history proves that religion is the cause of war death destruction and control. Muslim Jew, catholic or christian all are fact less belief systems, it is only the PC brigade who can claim to use it to uphold their sense of self righteousness, hence why I find both equally contemptible.
