Brave Kelly smashes Stourbridge fun day fundraising target
1:05pm Thursday 1st May 2014 in News
KIND-hearted Kelly Mullings exceeded all expectations after organising a sponsored fun day in Stourbridge.
She smashed her proposed target of £2,000 after over 100 family and friends descended on the Crystal Leisure Centre to support her 'Tri-ing for Cancer' day and help raise funds for Brierley Hill based charity the Paul Ackrill Fund.
Kelly, who is 23 and lives in Hawbush, was supported by the charity after she was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma late last year and wanted to give something back to them.
Her supporters took part in cycling and swimming marathons, plus continual netball games, while Stourbridge rugby player John Slim had his extensive head of hair and beard removed by a stylist from Croppers hairdressers and raised over £1,000 as a result.
The swimmers attempted to cover 34km, the equivalent of the channel, but excelled themselves by completing a distance of 53km in eight hours.
The cyclists covered hundreds of miles while netball teams from Ridgewood, Old Halesonians, Bramford, PGCE and Stourbridge Rugby Club competed continuously throughout the afternoon.
Despite raising funds, the event also attempted to highlight the profile of the Paul AckrillFund.
The charity was set up by Gill Ackrill in memory of her son Paul who passed away in 2001.
Since then, it has given out over £150,000 in grants to Black Country youngsters suffering with cancer.
Kelly said: "It was nice to see so many people turn out to support the event. We've raised £3,300 so far and the figure continues to rise."
She doesn't intend to stop following the April 27 event and is already looking to stage a sponsored 'spinathon', while a London to Paris cycle ride is also in the pipeline.
Donations can still be made online for another month by visiting justgiving.com/Try-ingForCancer or text TR1173 followed by an amount to 70070.
