Stourbridge speaker wins national competition
5:00pm Thursday 22nd May 2014 in News
STOURBRIDGE Speakers Club has produced a national champion for the first time in its 52 year history.
Rob Waldron, aged 36, won the National Topics Speaking Contest in Glasgow as part of the Association of Speakers Club's national conference and speech competitions.
He stormed to victory after he gave a three minute speech on spring.
Mr Waldron, from Clent, was given the topic just 30 seconds before the competition began and had to come up with an interesting, informative and structured speech.
He said: "It’s a great feeling to be national champion and something that I really wanted. That’s not saying I wasn’t nervous waiting for my turn and it got even worse when the judges left the room.
"The support , coaching and enthusiasm you can get from the club certainly helped me achieve this and I would thoroughly recommend coming along and seeing how the club can help you in work and personal life.
"At all times we try to encourage each other and offer constructive feedback on our speeches. Finger pointing and put-downs are not accepted."
The club meet on a fortnightly basis at The Talbot Hotel, High Street, Stourbridge.
The next meeting will take place on Monday June 2 at 7.45pm.
