THE centenary of the outbreak of World War I will be marked by a variety of activities on Armed Forces Day.

Himley Hall and Park will be hosting Dudley borough’s commemorative event on Sunday June 29 to celebrate the work of British servicemen and women.

During the event Dudley cadets will be manning a replica Great War trench and there will be a re-enactment of soldiers going to fight in the conflict.

The event, which starts at 11am, will close with a Beating of the Retreat.

Mayor of Dudley, Cllr Margaret Aston, said: “We’ll never really know the extent of what our armed forces personnel had to endure during the First World War but it is important we all remember how hard they fought for their country’s freedom, not only for their own, but future generations too.

“It is only right that we pay special tribute to all those who served and fell in the war and share the memories with today’s generation at our Armed Forces event so they are never forgotten.”
