OLD Swinford Hospital School in Stourbridge handed over £10,000 to a charity set up to remember a former pupil turned Army captain who was killed in Afghanistan.
Retiring headmaster Peter Jones presented Victoria Bowers with a cheque in memory of her husband Captain Rupert Bowers, aged 24, who was killed in March 2012 in an explosion whilst serving with 2nd Battalion The Mercian Regiment.
The money, raised during an 18-month fundraising drive, was handed over at the school’s annual prize-giving event on June 21 and it will go to the Help for Hugo charity fund set up for Captain Bowers’ son Hugo, who was born just weeks before tragedy rocked the family.
Staff and students at the school staged a series of events to help raise the cash including a 24-hour run, raffles, sales of cakes, books and charity wrist bands.
Money also came from retiring collections at church services and concerts and two students completed the Karrimor Great Trail challenge in the Lake District to pull in the pounds.
