A STOURBRIDGE teacher who found a World War I memorial hidden under the school stage, is appealing for family members of the fallen soldiers to come forward.

Paul Reynolds, who teaches geography at Redhill School, was taking part in a school production when he saw the plaque.

He said: "I was under the stage waiting to make an entrance when this battered item caught my eye buried under a variety of items and a sheet."

On closer inspection, Mr Reynolds realised it was a memorial listing names of men who had lost their lives in the First World War.

The men were pupils Valley Road School, Lye, which joined with Stourbridge Girls' High School in the 70s to form Redhill School.

Mr Reynolds said: "I set about getting the memorial renovated and one of our technicians, Les Bate, has done an excellent job on it.

"I also decided to research these young men and have been doing so for about four months with the help of the Worcester Archive and Roy Peacock, a local historian."

He now hopes to track down any remaining relatives of the six men, to invite them to a rededication service, that the school plans to hold in November, where the memorial will be given pride of place in the school hall.

The names are Albert Bartlett, Frank Bristow, Henry Cartwright, Albert Chance, George Edgar David Cook and Benjamin Harold Green.

Relatives of the fallen should call Mr Reynolds on 01384 816355.
