A BOROUGH pub is to host a screening of a film celebrating a mystery Black Country artist whose beer mat sketches of opera singer Mario Lanza have been appearing in pubs, clubs, shops and phone boxes for more than 50 years.

The Court House in New Street, Dudley, will be showing ‘Some Day I’ll Find You’ by London-based film-maker Barney Snow, who spent more than two years tracking the shadowy figure known as AJW.

The film, which will be screened this Saturday (November 15) at 7.30pm, follows the trail of the unidentified doodler across the Black Country and features scenes with locals including retired detective Mick Pearson who was enlisted to help identify the creative culprit dubbed the Black Country's Banksy.

Film-maker Barney, who has shot and directed a host of shows for TV including Trawlermen for BBC1, will be on hand for a question and answer session after the screening to which audience members are invited to take along their own AJW memorabilia.

Michael O’Neill, cellarman at The Court House where a number of the famous beer mats have appeared over the years, said: “When I heard a film had been made about our very own Banksy I just had to get it screened in our pub.

"We have got a fun night planned and are really looking forward to sharing the experience with other AJW enthusiasts."

He added: “I first heard about the Ghostwriter on TV in the early 1980s, so I was delighted when his beermats started appearing in my pub.

"We’ve even got a ‘Ghostwriter haunts here’ blue plaque which we’re particularly proud of.”

Tickets for the screening cost £4.50 and include a Black Country buffet - and they are available from The Court House.

The evening will also include a Mario Lanza lookalikes and soundalikes competition.

Profits from the event will go towards Black Country Day activities in 2015.
