CARING Kingswinford and Stourbridge Lions Club celebrate their 40th anniversary this year in the knowledge they have now raised over £1million for good causes.

During that period, they have helped many national charities including Breast Cancer Care, Alzheimer's Society, Diabetes UK and Macmillan Cancer Support.

But there have also been plenty of local organisations who have benefitted from the Lions and 26 of them received donations at a presentation evening last month.

Money was raised from fundraising events including the popular Christmas sleigh outings.

The Lions also staged plant sales, fashion shows, quizzes, ran a catering trailer and staged boxing and casino nights.

In addition, they've organised a Special Olympics event and put on concerts and medical awareness events for the borough's senior citizens.

Lion Karen Rice said: "While helping others is at the root of all that we do, we also have a great time doing it and the Lions soon become a group of friends."

They still have one original member, Rod Owen, from when the club was first chartered in February 1975.

And they also have their first-ever female president in Mary Thompson.

Now the Lions are on the lookout for new members.
