KINGSWINFORD schoolgirl Alix Hooper was determined to do something for her mum Sam after she was diagnosed with epilepsy.

The 15-year-old from Bromley Lane plans to complete a 5K run next month - despite her intense dislike of sport.

She kept her training a secret from mum until she was caught sneaking out of the house for a run at 6am in the morning.

Sam Hooper, who is 46 and works in internal sales for the Hayley Group in Halesowen, was taken ill at work last year and feared she had suffered a stroke.

Sam confirmed: "I collapsed twice at work and had to seek help from a neurologist. I'm still in an uncontrolled state at the moment and suffer a seizure every three or four days.

"It has made a massive impact on our lives and I'm off work at the moment. Then out of the blue Alix said she wanted to give something back to me.

"She will be running the 5K at the Dell Stadium in Brierley Hill on April 11 and trying to raise money for Epilepsy Research UK.

"Alix started a JustGiving page, but wasn't really expecting to raise much money - just a few quid. She only started it last Friday, but has already raised £160. She also wants to raise awareness of epilepsy.

"She has never done anything like this before, which is why it has surprised us so much. She's not sporty at all but very academic and is interested in astro-physics. She is also head of Crestwood School Council.
