HISTORIC gates are due to undergo work this week as part of the £3.1 million restoration of Mary Stevens Park.

The park’s gates will be removed for work from 9am on Saturday, March 28, and are anticipated to be returned to the site in July after being restored into full working order.

Plans to also improve the park’s railings, bandstand, war memorial, pool and new cafe, which will serve hot drinks and light refreshments from the tea gardens area when it opens in July, were boosted by £2.6m funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and the Big Lottery Fund.

John Millar, acting strategic director for environment, economy and housing at Dudley Borough Council, said: “We continue to work closely with the Friends of Mary Stevens Park to roll out this exciting restoration project.

“The lottery funding will enable us to restore historical aspects of the park, preserving it for many future generations to come.”

A heritage ranger has been appointed to deliver a programme of activities at the park.

During the gate restoration period the Heath Lane entrance will be closed throughout the day, but visitors will be able to access the park via the Stanley Road entrance.
