A STOURBRIDGE primary school has invested in state-of-the-art solar panels as part of its commitment to being green.

A self-confessed ‘eco-school’, Fairhaven Primary School, in Wordsley, is also introducing the Solar PV panels to make the school more energy efficient.

David Rowe, headteacher, said: “Participating in the Schools’ Solar PV programme is important to us.

“We are teaching the children about the role we all have to play in having a responsible attitude to where and how the energy we use is produced.”

The school is currently working towards a prestigious Green Flag award and the solar panels will not only help from a teaching standpoint, but also enable them to reduce costs in a 45-year-old poorly insulated building.

Through being part of the Evogreen Curriculum Assist Programme, the pupils will now learn about how renewable energy works and the benefits it brings for their school.

Unique funding means the school will produce an income of £121,070 over the projects 20 year lifespan.

Tom Garner, deputy headteacher and Eco-Council leader, said: “The whole project has been really exciting, right from the initial idea to the installation.

“The curriculum aspect of the project and the resources Evogreen provide to help us teach the children about solar power will be a fantastic addition to our children’s learning experiences.”
