BLOWING scores of glass bubbles and creating the perfect sphere will be the aim of one International Festival of Glass project.

The Community Breath project is a collaborative glassblowing scheme between the Bohemian glass community and Glasshouse College.

Glasshouse College students, as well as users of the Pocklington Trust, will join glass blowers and members of the public over the festival weekend to blow a number of large glass globes.

As part of the project, two tonnes of silica from Bohemia, in Czech Republic, will be mixed with 25kg of limestone from Dudley’s own Wren’s Nest National Nature Reserve to make the spheres.

Elisabeth Johnson, festival coordinator, said: “It is a back to basics approach to glassmaking and is a real challenge – blowing a perfect sphere.

“It is also great to work alongside our Bohemian counterparts to create these globes as a nod to our own heritage.

“The hope of the project is to give a wider group of people the opportunity to participate in blowing glass, and create a community piece of art”

The four-day International Festival of Glass is being held in the Stourbridge glass quarter from May 28 to 31, with the British Glass Biennale running alongside from May 28 to June 28.
