INTREPID members from Kingswinford Royal British Legion Club joined forces with local army and air cadets to put their best foot forward and help raise much-needed funds by taking part in a sponsored walk on Bank Holiday Monday.

The walkers were helping to raise cash which will go towards paying for the damage caused after the club suffered a break-in during late March.

A total of 50 walkers turned out to complete a course which took in Swindon, Wombourne and Kinver.

Branch secretary Fred Gorman said: "We had an excellent day. There were cadets from Wombourne, Kingswinford, Worcester and Scotts Green in Dudley taking part together with a few members, bearing in mind many of them are quite elderly.

"We had intended to complete a 25-mile course, but had to cut it short to 15 owing to a car boot sale in Wombourne which was causing a traffic hazard, so we had to curtail some of the initial route."

Some of the members took collecting boxes round with them and we managed to raise £280 on top of the sponsorship.

In addition to that, Kings Norton Coaches based in Halesowen, provided a free minibus to transport the walkers back to Kingswinford.

The walk was also publicised on Radio WM who gave regular updates on how they were progressing.

Mr Gorman added: "It's been really heartwarming to see the reaction of people from what has been such a dreadful event.

"The thieves who broke into the club caused a considerable amount of damage in addition to what was stolen. It created a considerable amount of extra work and stress, for people who are purely volunteers.

"Yet from such a negative, there have been so many positives that have come out of it, as the response from the public has been nothing short of excellent."

A present, there have been no arrests as a result of the break-in which is believed to have taken place on March 27 and no recovery of the safe that was stolen.
