Specialist rope rescue teams from Droitwich had to be called after two people got stuck about 300 metres up the face of a quarry in the Malvern Hills.

The pair called for help after getting stuck in North Quarry in the West Malvern area at about 5pm on Saturday, May 30.

Although a police officer initially went to the scene, they found they were unable to do anything and called for help from Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service.

A Kidderminster student who saved the life of a Bristol rugby fan has been awarded her university’s prestigious Vice Chancellor’s Medal.

Sarah Shaw, who is studying at the University of Worcester, was on duty as a first aider for Kingswood Rugby Football Club in Bristol as part of her course placement when a lifelong fan and club water-boy, Ian Hardwell, suffered a serious cardiac arrest.

Sarah responded immediately by administrating CPR until paramedics arrived and her actions contributed to Mr Hardwell making as ‘complete a recovery as possible’.

A motorcyclist had to be airlifted to hospital after a crash in Inkberrow, on Sunday.

An air ambulance and two regular ambulances were called to the scene at the junction of the A422 and the B4092 at about 9.45am.

Life-size steel models of wild animals will form part of Dudley Zoo's new entrance which will be completed this September.

Zoo director Derek Grove said the artistic approach will make a striking impression as visitors enter the award-winning attraction.

A total of five galvanised steel sculptures, created by artist Tim Roper from Bridgnorth, will lead people into the zoo from the improved car park, which is now nearing completion.

Halesowen's 1957 Carnival Queen has enjoyed being back in the limelight, promoting the revival of the event which will be held in July for the first time in almost 30 years.

But Joyce Knowles, aged 81, only became queen 58 years ago by chance after one of the finalists was disqualified.

Mrs Knowles recalled how she went with friends to the competition dance and was asked to stand-in when it was discovered one of the six finalists lived outside Halesowen Borough.

The red carpet will be rolled out for Alcester Court Leet’s Hollywood themed street market.

A range of stalls and family-focused entertainment will be put on during the event which is taking place on Sunday, June 14 and will see Alcester High Street closed until 6pm.

Kicking off the star-studded entertainment, a fancy dress competition will be held from 12.30pm in Bleachfield Street.

The Stourbridge and Halesowen branch of parenting charity NCT is looking for enthusiastic people to join its team of volunteers.

The branch currently offers coffee mornings, open houses, nearly new sales and annual events to enable expectant and new parents to meet others in the same situation and to make friends.

It also hopes to restart its popular Bumps and Babies group in September.
