MORE than 3,000 children across Dudley borough took part in this year’s summer reading challenge – the highest figures ever.

Out of the thousands to sign up at their local library, 2,293 children completed the challenge of reading six books during the school holidays.

Every child who accomplished the literary feat has received posters, stickers, a wristband, a medal and a certificate.

Councillor Ian Cooper, cabinet member for children’s services, said: “Reading opens up a whole world of learning and the reading challenge is a great way to get children and parents to explore what’s available at their local libraries.”

In total, 3,610 children aged between four and 11-years-old took part in this year’s competition, which was themed ‘record breakers’ and children could choose from any library books to read.

A special challenge was also set for children under 4 to collect six stickers, while teenagers had the opportunity to complete the reading challenge.

Cllr Rachel Harris, cabinet member for health and wellbeing, said: “As well as being lots of fun the challenge helps children to become confident readers.

“This year has been our most successful so far and I would like to thank the children, parents and local businesses for taking part and supporting the challenge.”
