PRINCESS Anne praised Dudley Canal and Tunnel Trust for keeping "history alive" when she officially opened its new multi-million pound visitor centre.

The Princess Royal enjoyed a tour of the two-storey building, known as The Portal, which includes an interactive exhibition, reception, office space, educational area, restaurant and gift shop.

During yesterday's visit, she also met the Mayor of Dudley, Councillor Steve Waltho and his wife Jayne before being introduced to management and trustees who played a key role in the project.

She also boarded a narrowboat and explored the Black Country's impressive limestone caverns during a 30-minute trip.

Stourbridge News:

“Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal’s visit is a real culmination of everybody’s hard work on this seven year project,” said Jeff Luesley, chairman of the trust.

“To finally see our new centre opened by royalty is truly an honour."

Children from Wrens Nest Primary School were also invited to the grand opening, and were treated to an educational workshop session in the centre’s new learning suite, allowing The Princess Royal to see the building in use before she unveiled a commemorative plaque.

Nick Morris, chief executive of the Trust, said: "We were tremendously excited to be able to welcome Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal to The Portal.

"The grand opening was a time for us to really celebrate what has been achieved here."
