MEMBERS of a Wordsley over 50s group raised a glass to The Queen to celebrate the monarch's big birthday.

The 50 Plus Club, based at Wordsley Community Centre, donned red, white and blue and tucked into a fish and chip lunch at their get together this week to celebrate Her Majesty's 90th birthday.

Members, some of whom are in their 90s, were also treated to entertainment by singing group The Ploughmen at the bash on Wednesday April 27.

Margaret Bull, entertainments secretary for the group, said: "They all said they had a thoroughly good afternoon. I was a bit tired after but it went off very well."

The club, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in February, meets every Wednesday from 2pm to 4pm at the community centre at The Green and lays on a variety of activities for people over 50.

In its heyday the group had a membership of about 80 and a waiting list of people wanting to join but these days numbers have shrunk to just over 30 people.

Mrs Bull said: "We still try to keep the club going; members do enjoy it. We have a bit of bingo, play games and darts and we try to arrange trips or go out for lunch. Most of our members are widows and they say it's been a Godsend for them."

Anyone interested in joining the club can call Mrs Bull on 01384 830828 or enquire at the community centre.
