FAMILY and friends of Stourbridge-born striker Richard Peniket were at Wembley on Sunday to see the 23-year-old help FA Halifax United lift the FA Trophy.

And he admits there were sure to be a few sore heads back home in the Black Country come Monday morning after the Yorkshire club’s 1-0 defeat of favourites Grimsby Town.

Peniket started his career as a youngster with Walsall and, after spells with Fulham and Tamworth, signed for Halifax in 2014. But he still has strong links back to Stourbridge.

“I’ll always be a Black Country lad and a big West Brom fan,” he said moments after collecting his winners’ medal. “All my family and my mates still live in Stourbridge and they’ve been down here in force at Wembley – I saw a few of them in the crowd. They looked like they’d had a few beers and they’ll probably continue the party back home.”

Peniket has been capped for Wales at all levels up to u21 but admits that memories of the Trophy win will last forever.

“Playing at Wembley is one of the best feelings I’ve ever had and winning the Trophy is just unbelievable. The celebrations after just say it all. It’s a dream since you’re a kid. It’s hard to describe the feelings.

“We headed down on Friday and then the nerves started kicking in on the Saturday when you realise you are playing at Wembley.”

Halifax were relegated down to the Vanarama National League North at the end of the season and their Stourbridge-born striker is hoping they can bounce straight back.

He added: “We have a few weeks off now before coming back ahead of a big season when we will look to get the club back where it belongs. We have to turn up next season and really go for promotion."
