WORDSLEY residents will be paying tribute to the soldiers who fought at the Battle of the Somme with a commemorative service at Holy Trinity Church this Friday.

A whistle will be blown to signal the start of the service at 7.30am, recreating the whistles which blew across the western front back in 1916 to send the troops over the top.

It signalled the start of one of the bloodiest battles of the Great War.

Wordsley councillor Kerry Lewis worked with residents to put the service together and said: "I was contacted by a local resident who asked if we could do something, so I contacted the Royal British Legion.

"The service is open to everyone who wants to remember our brave soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice."

Residents who require more information about the service can contact Councillor Paul Brothwood on 07791 498977.
