WIMBLEDON champion Jordanne Whiley made a winning start in defence of her British Open Wheelchair Tennis Championship title which is taking place at Nottingham throughout this week.

Halesowen's headline act swept into the quarter finals with an emphatic 6-0, 6-2 success over Germany's Katharine Kruger.

Jordanne said: "It was a solid win and I'm glad to get it done. It's nice to be on the hard courts as it suits my game and I can use my speed to get around the court and I feel I did that well.

"Coming in as the defending champion is a new experience for me and does add some pressure, but I'm looking forward to the week."

Whiley will have one eye on the Rio Olympics and her recent form will strike fear into her opponents.

She insisted: "I'm peaking at the right time and having a wonderful season. I won my first singles title at the US Open last year and I've won a load more since.

"I am the favourite now and that is something I've never experienced before - but I like it.

"Rio will be my third Olympic Games and it is as special as the first. It's the pinnacle of our sport and I'm desperate to bring back a gold medal!
