A KINGSWINFORD man has been jailed for six years after smashing a pool cue over a man's head outside a pub on New Year's Eve because he felt he had behaved inappropriately towards a young woman.

Judge Nicholas Webb at Wolverhampton Crown Court told 32-year-old Craig Davies it was clear he was "steaming with rage" and he added: "You resolved to show this man a lesson."

The brutal attack on the vulnerable victim from behind left him needing 10 staples in two cuts to his head and it left him anxious and concerned about going out in the future, the court was told.

The Judge said Davies had launched his attack because he thought the victim had touched the woman sexually and he stressed there had probably been a degree of provocation.

Davies had armed himself with a weapon, he went on, but he accepted it was an isolated offence by a man who had not used violence before and was full of remorse for his actions.

Nicole Steers, defending, maintained Davies had been told the behaviour of the victim had been "disgusting" - adding: "He lost his temper - he saw red and he responded in the way he did."

He now accepts he should have treated the incident differently and called the police and he added: "He is full of remorse for what he did. It was out of character and a one-off."

Davies, of Hildene Road, admitted wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm in the incident outside the Lawnswood pub in Wordsley.

Paul Farrow, prosecuting, said there were around 100 people in the pub enjoying the evening when the victim went outside for a cigarette.

The next thing he remembered was being treated by paramedics for head injuries, having been hit twice with the pool cue by Davies.

The Judge told Davies there was no evidence the victim had behaved inappropriately but he ruled he would deal with the case on the basis the woman had made a complaint and he was angry.
