IT’S chic to be geek in Dudley this half term as the borough’s libraries hold a programme of events celebrating science, technology, comics and digital media.

Throughout the school holiday, budding coders can learn all about robotics, Minecraft, mad science, animal handling, animation, manga, computer games, and raspberry pi.

The week kicks off on Saturday, February 11, with robot wars at Halesowen Library from 11.30am until 1pm and 1.30pm until 3pm, while on Saturday, February 18, there’s an RSPB drop-in craft at Stourbridge Library between 10am and 4pm.

There are two events on Monday, February 20, with create your own animation at Dudley Library from 10am until 11.30am and a Minecraft talk and workshop in Halesowen between 11am and noon.

Tuesday, February 21, features a create your own computer game event in Dudley from 10am until 11.30am, a Manga workshop at Stourbridge between 11am and noon, in Dudley Library from 2pm to 3pm and a Minecraft talk and workshop at Gornal Library from 3pm to 4pm.

There’s a chance to join in an animal extravaganza at Sedgley Library from 11.30am to 12.30pm on Wednesday, February 22, and at Wordsley Library from 2.15pm to 3.15pm.

While over at Lye Library youngsters can make electric paint robot cards from 2pm to 3pm and at Netherton Library from 2.30 to 3.30pm.

There are two mad science: explore explosions sessions on Thursday, February 23, at Kingswinford Library from 11am to noon and Long Lane Library between 2pm and 3pm which cost £3 per child, payable on the day, and a mini makers session at Cradley Library from 2pm to 3pm.

On Friday, February 24, there is a stop motion animation session at Brierley Hill Library from 11am to noon, and a mini makers session at Coseley Library between 2pm and 3pm.

Councillor Rachel Harris, cabinet member for libraries, said: “There’s a real appetite for coding and technology in the borough.

“The technology festival we held at Halesowen Library last year had hundreds of visitors, and there’s a huge demand for our coding clubs.

“I’m sure that this half term’s ‘Geek Week’ will go down really well with children and families wanting to find out more about technology.”
