HAGLEY councillor Rachel Jenkins says she's been "going round in circles" trying to get something down about speeding motorists charging up and down Hagley Hill.

The Worcestershire county councillor for the Clent Hills division says she's been pushing for action to put the brakes on fast and furious motorists since she was first elected as a county representative in 2013.

But she claims she has hit a dead end despite repeated pleas for help.

Cllr Jenkins, who also represents Hagley East on Bromsgrove District Council, said: "It is outrageous that residents of Hagley have to put up with high levels of speeding up and down the Birmingham Road stretch of the A456, known as Hagley Hill.

"Over the past four years I’ve been told one thing, then another. Worcestershire County Council, police and the Safer Roads Partnership have all played their part in this merry-go-round."

She said cars consistently average in excess of 50mph along the busy dual carriageway but she added: "I've been going round in circles for the past four years."

Cllr Jenkins said she first asked the local police team in 2013 if officers could use handheld laser guns on speeding motorists but claims she was told this could not be done on roads over 30mph for health and safety reasons.

She said: "The Hagley Hill speed limit is 40mph so deemed too dangerous for the local policing team."

The frustrated independent councillor claims she was later told in 2014 after approaching the Safer Roads Partnership that there weren't any appropriate enforcement sites and the junction of School Lane was not suitable as there was not enough distance from the 50mph sign to School Lane to record the speeds.

She says she has continued to raise the matter on various occasions since with the Partnership, the police and both the former and the current Police and Crime Commissioner for West Mercia - as well as asking county council highways bosses if anything can be done to change the road layout to slow motorists down - but her pleas have fallen on deaf ears.

A spokesman for Worcestershire County Council told the News: "The speed limit in this location is monitored and considered appropriate, and enforcement is a matter for the police."

While a spokesman for Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police Safer Roads Partnership said: "We have been working very closely with Worcestershire County Council highway engineers and Councillor Jenkins on this issue.

"Unfortunately establishing a speed enforcement site by the Safer Roads Partnership was not possible as there was not a safe or suitable location to carry out enforcement.

"In order to provide public reassurance there has been some police presence at this site and the local Safer Neighbourhood Team continue to monitor the situation."

Cllr Jenkins said: "The people of Hagley and A456 road users are being let down by the government bodies that are there to serve and protect them.

"They all should be ashamed of themselves as I have been committed to getting this sorted and I’m up against brick walls. We need action not constant excuses which is all anyone seems able to offer."
